Asian Gymnastics Union will organise a half day scientific symposium to be held on the November, 14th 2008 parallel to the 4th Senior Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships. This international event support the continent development project for the year 2008 which is supported by the FIG.
Coaches, technicians, medical and scientific delegates are all invited to attend. The symposium will be followed by a reception and refreshment.
The objective of? the symposium is to give an insight on the latest research on Artistic Gymnastics and their applications on the field.
Three plenary talks will be given by world research leaders in the areas of Applied Physiology, Applied Biomechanics and Technique; respectively:



Dr. Monèm Jemni (UK): Latest applied physiological research in Gymnastics
He is a former national gymnast from Tunisia, became an international coach (Paris, France) and scientist specialised in Physiology of Gymnastics. He provided Sport Science support to many teams and individuals, in particular in term of planning and physical preparation, amongst them the French male gymnastics team for more than 4 years (1996 – 2000).
He carried out research and lectured in different universities in France, in Tunisia, in the USA and in the UK. His research area includes the enhancement of physiological aspects of human performance (strength, aerobic and anaerobic metabolisms) and more recently health related issues (obesity, diet and hormonal regulation in relation to exercise).

Prof. John Salmela (Canada): Latest applied Psychological research in Gymnastics
He a former national level gymnast from Canada, occupied key positions in teaching and research for 34 years at the Universities of Laval, Montréal, Ottawa and Minas Gerais, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Now happily and actively retired (early retirement since 2000) in Brazil where he runs a copy editing service in English for Brazilian scholars.
His research interests are in career development in sport psychology, the development of coaches and athletes, the role of families in the development of expertise and in the training of mental skills in sport.

Dr. Willam (Bill) Sands (USA): Latest applied biomechanical research in Gymnastics
He is the Recovery Center Leader and Sport Scientist at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.? Previously, he served as the Head of Sport Biomechanics and Engineering and before he occupied several academic positions in few universities in the USA. He is the Director of Research and Development for USA Gymnastics. Dr. Sands, a former gymnast, was also a World Championship coach in gymnastics and produced several Olympians, more than a dozen national team members, and many World Championship team members.

Research posters will be displayed in the hall of the venue. All abstracts will be published in a magazine edited by the Asian Gymnastics Union during the Championships.
